Laser Cutting vs. CNC Routing: Selecting the Right Process

While both processes work from flat sheet plastic, laser cutting eliminates mechanical cutting forces, eliminating clamping marks and enabling sharp internal corners with an ultra-thin kerf (approx. 0.15–0.25 mm).

  • Sharp Internal Radii: Lasers cut tight internal 90° corners without the tool corner radius limitations inherent in end mills.
  • Optical Finish: Acrylic laser-cut perimeters feature glossy, transparent finishes straight off the bed without subsequent flame or mechanical polishing.
  • Material Compatibility: Optimal for PMMA, POM, PET, ABS, and wood/plastic composites. (PVC and PTFE requiring specialized ventilation/tooling are handled strictly in line with safety and technical protocols).

Engineer's DFM Checklist for Laser Cutting

Vector Geometry (1:1 Scale) Submit closed vector paths in DXF, DWG, or native STEP. Ensure lines are non-overlapping to avoid double-pass burns.
Minimum Wall Thickness Maintain feature widths at least equal to sheet thickness (e.g., ≥ 3.0 mm bridge for 3.0 mm acrylic) to resist heat distortion.
Hole Diameters Ensure hole diameters are at least 1.0× material thickness to maintain clean vertical walls and avoid taper.
