Design for Manufacturability (DFM) in Custom Blow Molding

Hollow part geometry requires specific design provisions that differ significantly from standard plastic injection molding. When reviewing CAD files for custom blow-molded enclosures and tanks, Plasticpartsmfg engineers analyze the following critical criteria:

  • Corner & Edge Radii: Sharp corners cause excessive wall thinning during parison expansion. Generous corner radii (minimum 3× to 5× wall thickness) ensure uniform structural rigidity.
  • Blow Ratio Management: We evaluate part depth-to-width ratios to prevent deep draw pockets that lead to weak spots or localized blow-outs.
  • Pinch-Off Land Geometry: Steel pinch-off edges are integrated into aluminum tooling to guarantee reliable weld line formation at the base or parting plane.
  • Thread & Neck Calibration: Precision compression or calibrated blow pins maintain tight neck tolerances for leak-proof cap sealing and threaded connectors.
